A look back at the summer season with Karan Parmar

With the junior season over and the summer drawing to an end it's time for our lead coach Karan Parmar to look back on his first year in the job.

We now have around 220 junior members with many new faces and after a damp start to the summer a great time was had by all.

Karan said: "We had problems early on with the weather, I don't think we've had such a wet April for many years, so to go from there to having every team playing multiple fixtures and our first year of entering several teams into the summer leagues was really successful.

"The amount of new sign ups we've had, kids coming from schools all around, and kids moving from other clubs has been fantastic in terms of growing our membership and growing the club as a whole.

"I'm quite proud of the fact we have been attracting people from word of mouth with players, coaches and parents letting others know we're doing a good job and I think that organic way of people joining is really pleasing.

"We asked for a little bit of feedback and we generally we've had people saying it's wonderful to see so many kids there and how well organised it has been.

"Probably the most important thing has been the parents whose child have tried the cricket club for the first time on a trial session and then come back and said they've had a wonderful evening and want to come back again.

"The kids are learning new skills, playing in matches, having fun and interacting in a positive environment. We wanted to make Radlett one big team and I think that's coming across in the fun kids are having on Friday nights and Sunday mornings.

"It's great to look at large numbers joining in the youngest age groups because at the end of the day what we really want to see is kids joining at 7, 8 or 9 and learning cricket, going all the way through the age groups and then hopefully going on to play for one of our senior teams for years to come.

"We already have a fantastic example in Noah Cornwell who has come all the way through the Radlett system and now has a pro contract at Middlesex and has represented England Under-19s and many of our young coaching team have also gone from the juniors to playing for Radlett at a high level. These kids can be the backbone of the club for years to come and that's really exciting.

"This year the Under 9s did really well, the Under-10s got to finals day, all our teams finished in the top three in their summer league groups so that's fantastic and we have a lot of kids now playing and trialling for Hertfordshire and the South Area plus a couple for Middlesex which is lovely to see.

"Training leads to playing, playing leads to performing and performing leads to winning things which helps the club grow and that's what we want to double down on now, that Radlett is inclusive, it's great quality and we're creating an environment where people are enjoying their cricket. We've tried to instil a positive brand of cricket and it's been great to see kids hitting fours, hitting sixes and being positive in everything they do.

"It's been great to see so many parents offering to become team managers and help out and we will always need more of that. It shows the good morale at the club and that we're growing something sustainable.

"Now we're moving towards the end of the summer we're finalising dates and venues for our winter sessions and that should hopefully be confirmed soon, we're already getting lots on enquiries about the winter nets which is great as it shows people have real enthusiasm.

"I've loved it, it's been a lot of hard work and a lot of hours have gone into it but I've had such great help from people like Nick Fielden, Heather Walmsley and all my coaches. Coaching the kids has been an absolute pleasure."
